How To Reduce Your Impact On The World …
Unfortunately, One of the biggest threats facing mankind is mankind! Our modern day lives and lifestyles are wreaking havoc on, just about, everything. We have, for too long, taken without giving any thought to the consequences of our actions. Now, everywhere we look disaster looms, yet we seem incapable of grasping the fact that if we continue on our current path we will soon reach, what experts call, the ‘tipping point’, or point of no return.
And, although we may feel a little overwhelmed, the great news is that we all have a role to play, for the future really is in our hands….
So, what can we do to make a difference to the world tomorrow?
Well, one of the easiest things we can all do is waste less. As the more we waste, the more we accelerate the effects of climate change and one way we can reduce the amount we waste, is to grow our own, and here are some easy waste busting tips.
1: Don’t bin it!
The first thing we have to remember is that we can’t just throw stuff away, as there is no ‘away’. In fact our landfills and dumps are not just full, they are an environmental nightmare...
In fact landfills are the biggest man-made source of methane. A gas that is 23 times more harmful to the environment than CO2 and that is bad news for everything.
Don’t forget to take a look at our composting tips! As composting our waste reduces our impact, saves us money, improves the structure and health of our soil, and will help us grow healthier, more nutritious plants and vegetables. All you need is waste, air and water!
2: Say No!
Let’s make some noise. As consumers, not only can we make choices, we can use our voices. So why not use yours to say ‘no’ to needless packaging.
3: We can reduce.
We may all love fast food, but fast food is jam packed with salt, sugar and fats that really aren’t good for us. And, cutting down our intake of high sugar, high fat food-stuffs, is one thing we can all do to improve our health and well-being. Let’s regain control of our trolleys and waistlines.
4: We can reuse.
Yes, its time to rid our lives of single use plastic! It’s a pandemic that is threatening the health and wellbeing of everything. So let’s get plastic wise.
The thing is, the plastic problem doesn’t just stop with banning the plastic bottle, bag, food wrap or straw. And, the truth is, we cannot recycle our way out of this mess, as unlike glass or paper, every time plastic is recycled it degrades, and its uses become ever more limited and this, only serves to fuel demand.
FACT: Today, we produce some 340 million tonnes of plastic every year, unfortunately, 50% of it is single use, and this, only feeds our throwaway culture.
And, as countries work to ban single use plastic, the reality is, manufacturers are looking to increase production by a staggering 31% in the next 5 years!
5. We can recycle.
It may sound simple, but recycling our many bottles, papers, and cans is just one way we can help reduce our impact on the world.
FACT: Recycling one tonne of aluminium saves the carbon dioxide emissions of driving nearly 27,000 miles.
6. We can refurbish.
It’s time to get savvy, although a refurbished phone may not have the latest app, it may just help transform someone else’s life.
Did you know? Holding on to our mobile phones for an extra year, is not just good for our pockets, it will help cut its lifetime CO2 emissions by one third, and that is great news for the planet.
So why not give it a try
7. We can upcycle.
Upcycling is a great way of breathing new life and transforming our old and unloved things. The results can be quite breathtaking; check out Pinterest for some uber cool and utterly stylish ideas for your house and home.
8. We can share.
Sharing is the new caring, so why not start a share shed…
Let’s face it, we are all guilty of holding onto stuff that lie under our beds or in our sheds and garages gathering dust. Imagine being able to share our many power tools and equipment with our local community. Not only is it better for you, it’s better for your community and, it will help reduce the amount of the world’s natural resources we use, to feed our modern day lives.
FACT: Incredible as it may seem, manufacturing just one computer and monitor, takes 530 pounds of fossil fuel, 48 pounds of chemicals and1.5 tons of water – and that is totally unsustainable.
9. We can love our leftovers…
There are so many fabulous family friendly recipes that we can make using what’s left in our fridge, so let’s get smarter and reduce the amount of food we needlessly waste. And, it will save us oodles of cash too.
FACT: The reality is people across the developed world dump, trash, and throw away over a third of all the food they produce!
To make matters worse, half of it could be eaten.
10: We can all stop, think and consider…
And embrace all of the R's - Reduce, refuse, reuse, repair, rethink, regift, recover and recycle so that we reduce the impact we have on the world.
